- “The Reed Flute’s Song”:
- Considered one of Rumi’s most famous poems, it tells the story of a reed flute longing for reunion with its source, symbolizing the human soul’s yearning for the divine.
- “Only Breath”:
- This poem explores the transient nature of life and the interconnectedness of all things, reminding us to cherish each moment and find beauty in the present.
On the day of my death when my body departs
Do not think that I am in pain in this world
Do not mourn for me, and do not say farewell, farewell
Because falling into the trap of demons is the real pity
When you see my corpse, do not lament separation, separation
For me, it will be the time of union and meeting
Do not say goodbye to me as you entrust me to the grave
For the grave is the veil of the gathering of paradise
Why do you think it is a loss when you see the setting
Of the sun and the moon? It is the time for their rise
It may seem like sunset to you, but it is actually sunrise
The grave appears as a prison, but it is the liberation of the soul
Which seed fell into the ground and did not sprout?
Why do you think that your seed, the human, is otherwise?
Which water jug fell down and did not rise?
Why does Joseph’s well complain about the soul?
Close your mouth from this side and open it towards the other
For your cries of “Huwi!” will echo in the realm of the eternal.
O lovers, O lovers, today we are here, and so are you
Immersed in the ocean, only the familiar knows the way
If the world is flooded and every wave becomes like a camel
Why should the waterbirds grieve when the bird of the sky is their companion?
We have lit our faces with sugar and learned from the waves and the sea
Just like the fish that has the ocean and the soul-stirring storm
O Sheikh, give us your robe, immerse us in your water
O Moses of our time, come and strike the sea with your staff
This wind in every corner is brewing a different longing
My longing is for that cupbearer, everything else is yours
Yesterday the cupbearer snatched the turbans from the intoxicated
Today he offers wine, so we can cast off our cloaks
O envy of the moon and Jupiter, hidden among us like a fairy
You lead us joyfully, but tell us, where are you taking us?
Wherever you go, you are with me, O eyes shining brightly
If you want, take me towards intoxication, if you want, take me towards annihilation
Know that the world is like Mount Sinai, and we are like Moses, seekers
With each revelation, the mountain is rent asunder
One part becomes green, one part becomes ruby
One part becomes a precious gem, one part becomes ruby and amber
O seeker of His vision, look in this forest of His
O you who have tasted the wind, we have become intoxicated by the sound
O gardener, O gardener, why are you entangled within us?
If we have taken the grapes, it is you who have taken our basket
If you are not a seeker, become one and join us
If you are not a musician, become one and sing with us
If you are not destitute in love, become impoverished
If you are not a lord, become a servant with us
One candle can ignite a hundred candles in this gathering
Whether you are dead or alive, become alive with us
It will open your feet and reveal light to you
So that your entire being, like a flower, may blossom with laughter
Step into the tavern for a moment and behold the living hearts
Throw away the silk, become intoxicated in the tavern with us
When the seed is scattered, it sprouts and becomes a tree
If you grasp this secret, you will be scattered with us
Shams Tabrizi speaks with the bud of the heart
When your eyes open, you will become the seer with us
Oh, love, oh, love, how true it is, O God
How sweet, how good, how beautiful it is, O God
How warm we are, how warm we are from this love like the sun
How hidden, how hidden, how manifest it is, O God
Oh, moon, oh, moon, oh, companion of the wine
You have made the soul and the world ecstatic, O God
Oh, fervor, oh, fervor, that has stirred the universe
Oh, work, oh, burden, that is there, O God
The king of riders has fallen, fallen
Oh, circle, oh, circle, that has risen, O God
We have fallen, fallen, as if we will not rise
We do not know, we do not know what commotion it is, O God
From every corner, a different smoke arises
Again and again, what a tumult it is, O God
There is no trap, no chain, why are we bound?
What bond, what chain, that is standing, O God
What a pattern, what a pattern in the cauldron of hearts
It is strange, it is strange, from above, O God
Be silent, be silent, until it is revealed
For strangers have taken over, left and right, O God
Do not be wise among lovers, especially in the realm of love
Especially in love, this ruby robe is unique
Far away are the wise ones from the lovers
Far away is the scent of the rose garden from the morning breeze
If a wise one enters, say there is no way
But if a lover enters, say a hundred greetings
The assembly of sacrifice and strict reason
Profit lies in being a lover, not in calculation
Love feels ashamed in the presence of rationality
Old age is worthless in the days of the morning breeze
Open the door, O lovers, faster than the wind
Life without love is like a desert
Shams Tabrizi cannot be captured by reason
Put your hand on your heart and go, oh soul!

What matter is there for garments? Oh lovely waist, dance away!
Oh intoxicated one who has become one with existence,
The parchment of annihilation has arrived, for the journey, dance away!
In hand, the cup of wine, my idol has come on foot,
If you are not material, dance away with the masculine king!
The end of war has come, the melody of the harp has arrived,
Joseph has emerged from the well, oh ignorant one, dance away!
How long will there be promises? And this head, should it remain in prostration?
Has separation taken away color and effect? Dance away!
When will that moment come when someone says to me:
“Oh, ignorant one, become annihilated! Oh, knowledgeable one, dance away!”
Our peacock will emerge and those colors will shine,
It will soar with the bird of the soul, without wings and feathers, dance away!
