Shahriar poems in English and Farsi
Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Behjat Tabrizi, known as Shahriar, was a renowned Iranian poet born in 1904. He spent his early years in Tabriz and later moved to Tehran for his education, studying medicine. Shahriar’s life was marked by his intense love for a woman named Soraya, which inspired much of his poetry. His works can be categorized into traditional, romantic, and socially-themed poems, often influenced by other Persian poets like Hafiz. Shahriar also wrote in Turkish and composed the book of poems “Heydar Baba.” He passed away in 1988 due to illness.
Here are a few lines from some of Shahriar’s famous poems:
Though this body is old, the heart remains youthful
In its raw imaginings, it continues to sing melodies
No shame from old age does the fearless heart feel
Beneath carefree eyes, it keeps secrets concealed
It loves fervently, despite knowing well the pain
Moment by moment, it sings elegies for its gain
Creating an image, with every passing moment
In its thoughts, it weaves curtains of enchantment
The helpless mind, like clay, remains in its place
Given into the hands of the heart’s daring embrace
This bewildered heart, so lost in its quest
Like its speech, to its loss, it’s attested
I said, “Don’t bring shame upon our town”
But seeing it, my worldly stature goes down
The nightingale, seeing a water-lily so fair
Has lost itself, singing sweetly, unaware
Ashamed of the youth that’s not a life, I feel
In my life, the chance for youth is not ideal
In just two days of life, I’ve grown weary
Thankful that this life isn’t eternal, dearly
Tears have opened my eyes like a dark cloud
In this horizon, no radiant joy stands proud
Rather than in grief, I’ll choose gradual decay
Regret that this act of self-end is not a swift way
I don’t blush, I don’t redden my cheeks for a fleeting gale
In our feast, a rosy blush from wine isn’t pale
Observe how the watchdogs wear wolfish guise
For the master, this night’s manner, no wise disguise
The nightingale of the garden laments, alas
That from the autumn of the garden, no joyful tune surpasses
No one is more forgotten in this corner than I am
From those sitting in corners, no one is more silent than I am
Everyone is embraced in an illusion, and there’s no one
Oh flower, in your illusion, no one is more embraced than I am
From the wine-hued ruby, all horizons drink
But in this tavern, no one drinks sorrow more than I do
The entire world has fallen under your spell, but
No one has fallen deeper, nor is more intoxicated than I am
My night is without your moon-like face, clad in darkness
But my night is not darker than your dark attire, no darker than I am
You said you’re not an ear to hear love from me
Oh rarity, where is an ear more receptive than mine?
More than Bijan, I’m willing to be sacrificed, O Turk
Shed my blood, who is more Siavash-like than me?
With your ruby lips, I’ve said that remedy is in sips
Oh, it bloomed, what lips are more sweet than yours, sips more sweet than I am
Finally, what is a pear compared to my tears, oh flower
No other is as overflowing in this desert, more gushing than I am
I never took a companion or a spouse to share my burden
You became a mother and I, with all my aging, your son
You cut a piece even from a lion’s liver, yet still
I remain that same lover with a bleeding heart
I drink the blood of my heart and still, my eyes are on the cup
My crime is this: I’m a man of heart and insight
I, who never pursued desire with love in my youth
Desire for love and youth still clings to my old age
Your father sold his precious gem for gold and silver
But the father of love will burn, for my father arrived
Love, freedom, beauty, youth, and skill
Amazingly, none faded for I lack gold and silver
I wish my skill was the key to gold and silver
That in your market, my skill could unlock a trade
Today, everyone from the city has left for the Thirteenth
But I myself am that Thirteenth, surpassing them all
I’ll freshen up the old covenant on its walls and doors
Sometimes I’ll pass by the alley of my beloved
Turn from the others, for my thoughts are centered on you
Only you know that I belong to another world
From the pursuit of others, my eyes and heart are full
I am a lion, and the streams of wolves can’t quench me
The blood of my heart surges like a ruby in my liver
Shahriar, what can I do? My gem and precious stone
Lost on the path, and with a face like the moon, you’ve arrived
Perhaps, oh wayward witness, you’ve come onto the path
Please look at my white hair, oh black-eyed one
If fate has brought you here with a dark destiny
A breath still remains for the well of your sorrow, slain
Beware, oh mirror, you’ve come into the range of sighs
From the palace of oppression to the alley of loyalty
May I become your dust, since you’ve walked all this way
What would you do with me and my humble abode?
You, who have entered as a royal guest behind the curtain
My heart flutters with every lion-hearted pulse
For, like a deer, you’ve entered the lion’s gaze
The sun’s hat has fallen from the sky
In greeting to you, oh sun, the hat has arrived
Oh Shahriar, may blessings be upon the shrine of love
For under this shade of fortune, you’ve sought refuge
Oh breeze, what did they tell you
That you’ve fallen silent,
What wine did they offer you
That you became intoxicated,
You, who were the sanctuary of love and affection
What misfortune struck you that you became ashes and silent,
With a hundred melodies, you were the voice
And hearts were all ears,
What did you hear that you closed your lips
And turned into an ear, yourself,
Though fidelity is lacking in people,
Yet, my flower,
Don’t think that you’ve left and
Been forgotten…!
You’ve come, my life, to be sacrificed for you, but why now?
Unfaithful, why now that I’ve stumbled from my feet?
You offered a healing potion, after the death of Sohrab,
Callous, you desired this sooner, why now?
Our life has no time for today or your tomorrow,
As a guest of your today, why think of tomorrow?
Oh beloved, we’ve given you our youth with coquetry,
Don’t flirt with the youth now, be tender with us,
Alas, with these brief, unvalidated lives,
So much ignorance, love-intoxicated like me, why now?
My passion, with head bowed, asked for a response,
Oh sweet lips, why a bitter answer so high?
Oh night of separation, where my eyes found no sleep,
Why are you a lullaby now, with my luck asleep?
The sky, like a gathering of eager souls, is restless,
I’m amazed, why doesn’t the world scatter from itself?
In the autumn of separation, oh nightingale with mournful nature,
Silence was the condition for loyalty, why the tumult now?
Oh Shahriar, you wouldn’t embark without your beloved,
Why undertake this journey alone, a journey to Doomsday, why?
I’m old now, yet my heart sometimes remembers youth,
My eager soul still longs for the melody’s truth.
Until my spirit leaves and the instrument of poetry takes my hand,
I’ll endure expressing my weakness and incapacity.
A nightingale still sings within my breast,
With autumn, it reconciles and scatters flowers in zest.
We engaged in love’s battles and are still here,
Pervin’s eye still twinkles as a playful leer.
Our flute remains silent, but this Venus, the demon, still,
With the same ardor and melody, continues its thrill.
If the Earth’s smoke ascends, behold the sky,
With its arrogance, it acts like a lofty high.
Years have gone by, and my hand’s grasp fades,
But inside me, life persists, undiminished, it cascades.
Despite your apparent disregard, you say my past wrongs,
My memories cling together, obstinately throngs.
Every year, I contemplate spring, fruitlessly I pray,
Yet when spring arrives, it brings autumn’s decay.
I was once a child, a thief, old, and frail,
What the universe does, it conceals from our tale.
An era approaches its end, the heavens, a storehouse,
The ledger of our times, too, becomes a warehouse.
Oh Shahriar, say: our tender hearts, do not break,
For if not compassionate, the judge destiny does make.
